Carry Forward

...I suppose history does have a way with repeating itself.

There wasn't much to gain from running, especially not from what affects us all.  In spite of any impact we had where we were, it was but a drop in the proverbial bucket in the face of the strife we were all enduring.  I admit I was scared - terrified, even - of what little future we may have.  There was more to be done.  A lot more.

As I grew older, I also grew more afraid.  What would be left for them when I'm too old to provide?

Would there be anything at all?

I'm sorry I tried to run, I'm sorry I tried to ignore all the things happening around us.  Those things found their way to me one way or another, and I guess in a twisted sort of way I'm thankful.

So overly-concerned about my own mortality and keeping what we have, I couldn't bring myself to step forward like I used to if it meant risking the confusing, haphazard family I keep so close to me.

Must admit, I still really don't want to...but...

...if it means they have a brighter future than their past...

...if I can see them smile again...

...then I'll step forward and take my stand against this decay.

I know I may not look like much, especially now, but do not underestimate me-- one's eyes do not always see truth.
